DR. HOLSWORTH TO PRESENT AT VSAE MEETING
Holsworth to Present “Virginia Political Outlook 2019” in January

The Virginia Society of Association Executives (VSAE) will hold its annual Virginia Political Outlook luncheon on Friday, January 4, 2019 at the Omni Richmond Hotel. A networking reception will be held from 11:00-11:45 a.m. and a luncheon from 11:45 a.m.-1:30 p.m.  Dr. Bob Holsworth is the speaker.  

This is the twenty-first consecutive year Dr. Holsworth will present his political insights to VSAE. The 2018 election was potentially a power changing event for Virginia’s House of Delegates. Holsworth will share what can be learned from the election and what this might mean for the Commonwealth and the country going forward. He will also give a preview of the upcoming General Assembly session and Virginia’s congressional elections coming up in November.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Dr. Bob Holsworth is a leading political analyst from Virginia and is seen regularly on television. He received his Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and is a retired VCU professor, where he taught courses in Virginia politics, American politics, and political theory. VSAE BESTOWS ANNUAL AWARDS OF EXCELLENCE
Bob Ramsey; Linda Loving; Matt Polansky; and Larry Land Receive Industry’s Top Awards

Four individuals were honored last week with the highest awards in the Commonwealth’s association management industry. The Virginia Society of Association Executives (VSAE) annual Awards of Excellence were presented at VSAE’s Holiday Awards Luncheon & Silent Auction on Friday, December 7 at the Hilton Richmond Hotel & Spa at Short Pump. 

Bob Ramsey, Executive Director of the Virginia College of Emergency Physicians, was awarded the CEO Award of Excellence. This Award is given to an outstanding association professional who has been nominated by his peers in recognition of his leadership and achievement. 

Bob is an outstanding association professional who has been an active member of VSAE for 36 years and has renewed his CAE 14 times. He has served many associations in a career spanning more than 40 years. He has a passion for learning and is always eager to share his knowledge to help others. Bob is receiving this award in recognition for his many years of service to VSAE and the association community. 

Linda Loving, CIC, AISM, AIAO, Chief Operating Officer for the Independent Insurance Agents of Virginia, Inc.,was awarded the Association Staff Award of Excellence. This award recognizes an association staff professional for her contributions to her association and VSAE. Criteria for this award include high integrity, professionalism, peer recognition, a record of success in association management, and consistent leadership and service to VSAE. 

Linda has been with IIAV for over 30 years. She broke in at least two association CEOs while serving as the interim CEO between the two. She has served and provided oversight to virtually every facet of the association and for-profit affiliate.  She has navigated the representative industry achieving several highly recognized and demanding professional credentials. Due to her strong oversight, the for-profit affiliate is one of the largest and most highly respected in their representative federation. 

Matt Polansky, Senior Conference Sales Manager for Colonial Williamsburg Hotels, was awarded the Associate Member Award of Excellence. This award recognizes an Associate member who has distinguished himself through professionalism and customer service.

Matt has been a dedicated member of VSAE for many years. Always supporting VSAE to the max, he rarely misses an event. He has an infectious smile and a great sense of humor and is the most genuine person you will ever meet in your life. Clients and co-workers describe him as “a true team player, an advocate for clients, and the consummate hospitality sales professional”.

Larry Land, CAE, Lifetime Member of VSAE, received the Career Service Award, which is presented to an individual outside of or retired from the field of association management, who through hard work, pleasing personality, and dedication to his job, has provided exceptional service to the association community over the years. 

Larry has a long history with VSAE and the community. He never missed a single opportunity to volunteer his time for any charity or cause that VSAE was supporting. Always giving of his time, he very well could be awarded volunteer of the year for the countless hours over a lifetime spent helping non-profits in the community support those less fortunate.

VSAE HOLDS HOLIDAY AWARDS LUNCHEON & SILENT AUCTION
VSAE to Present Coveted Awards of Excellence at Most Popular Annual Event

The Virginia Society of Association Executives (VSAE) will hold its annual  HolidayAwards Luncheon & Silent Auction on Friday, December 7, 2018 at the Hilton Richmond Hotel & Spa at Short Pump. The event will feature a Silent Auction at 10:30 a.m. with the Awards Luncheon to follow from 11:45 a.m.-1:30 p.m.

The event begins with a Silent Auction featuring over 100 items. Auction proceeds go to benefit VSAE’s educational programming as well as a designated charity. This year’s charity is Jacob’s Chance, a not-for-profit organization that is dedicated to promoting wellness for youth and young adults ages 5-30 with special needs through athletic programs, social experiences, exercise, education, volunteerism, and skills training. Jacob’s Chance is unique in that participation is open to all individuals regardless of diagnosis and is free of charge.

The Awards Luncheon immediately follows the Silent Auction. The luncheon features VSAE’s coveted Awards of Excellence which recognize leadership and service to the association community. VSAE gives the awards annually in four categories. The CEO Award of Excellence is the highest award VSAE can bestow upon one of its Executive members. This award is given to an outstanding chief staff executive who has been nominated by peers in recognition of his or her leadership and achievement. The Association Staff Award of Excellence is given to an outstanding association staff professional for his or her contributions to their association. The Associate Member Award of Excellence allows the association community to recognize those suppliers and vendors among its members who have distinguished themselves among their peers through their leadership qualities and professionalism. Finally, the Career Service Award is presented to an individual outside of the field of association management who through hard work, pleasing personality, and dedication to his or her job, has provided exceptional service over the years to the association community.

Larry Seibert to Present “Designing and Interpreting Performance Analytics for Your Association”

The Virginia Society of Association Executives (VSAE) will hold its November Seminar Series with Lunch on Friday, November 2, 2018 at the Four Points by Sheraton Richmond. The meeting will feature a 2.5-hour seminar at 8:30 a.m., with a networking reception and luncheon to follow from 11:00 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. The content leader will be Larry Seibert, PhD of Association Metrics.

The seminar, Designing and Interpreting Performance Analytics for Your Association,” will focus on the best practices of conducting voice-of-the-member research, including questionnaire design, data collection, data cleaning and analytics, and interpretation of results. The format of the seminar will be a combination of lecture, discussion, and in-class exercises. The pros and cons of various research methods will also be presented. During the lunch, Seibert will present “Is Your Association Typical?”   

ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Larry Seibert is the founder and CEO of Association Metrics, a research and consulting firm that specializes in conducting voice-of-the-member research for membership associations.  The primary focus of his research is the measurement and management of member loyalty. Over the past fifteen years his clients have included individual membership associations serving professionals in the areas of health care, accounting, engineering, real estate, information systems, counseling, transportation, higher education and food service, as well as trade associations serving companies in the areas of distribution and rental properties. In addition to his twenty years of business experience in industry and consulting, he was also a Marketing professor for twenty years.  He has a Ph.D. with a research focus in consumer behavior, and an MBA with a concentration in marketing.

Kevin Eastman to Present “Leading Through The Eyes of Those You Lead”

The meeting will feature a seminar at 1:30 p.m., followed by a networking reception from 4:00-5:00 p.m. The content leader will be Kevin Eastman from KEWE, LLC.

This interactive seminar, “Leading Through The Eyes of Those You Lead,” is an information-packed and thought-provoking presentation in which Kevin will take attendees behind the scenes of some of the most successful professional sports teams today, and share how they view the position of leadership. Kevin will discuss topics ranging from what “real” leadership is, to leadership “musts” and the most sought-after needs of those we lead. In addition, he will address some of the 25 most powerful words that all successful athletes, coaches, leaders, teams, and organizations live by.

Kevin Eastman is a corporate speaker and internationally-known basketball clinician who brings his knowledge and experience in sports to the business world. He speaks on various topics, including championship culture, teamwork, leadership, motivation, and individual success. Over his 40 years in the game, Kevin has coached basketball at all levels, including 13 years in the NBA. He was a top assistant to Doc Rivers with the 2008 NBA World Championship Boston Celtics, and most recently served as an assistant coach and Vice President of Basketball Operations with the Los Angeles Clippers.

VSAE TO HOLD FALL CONFERENCE WITH TRADESHOW
Virginia’s Premier Conference & Tradeshow for Associations, Non-profits, and Professional Meeting Planners

August 1, 2018

The Fall Conference, Virginia’s premier conference and tradeshow for association executives, professional meeting planners, and other non-profit leaders will take place Thursday, October 4 at the Greater Richmond Convention Center (GRCC).  This is the twenty-second consecutive year the Virginia Society of Association Executives (VSAE) has partnered with Virginia Business magazine and GRCC to hold this event (formerly known as the Educational Symposium & Expo).

This year’s event will feature recognition of the 2018 Virginia Business Meeting Planner of the Year during the tradeshow. The tradeshow includes over 60 exhibitors ranging from hotels, resorts, and local CVBs to accounting firms, event technology providers, and organizational consultants, all focused on helping attendees deliver more value to their organization and its members.

The conference begins with an entertaining and enlightening keynote presentation on how to “Rock Your Engagement” with Dr. Sherene McHenry. Other session topics include recruiting, engaging, and retaining members; emergency preparedness for meetings; human resources and workplace culture; and boosting your productivity.

VSAE HOLDS SIG-A-PALOOZA
Event Includes Breakfast and Peer-to-Peer Small Groups

The Virginia Society of Association Executives (VSAE) will hold its third annual SIG-a-Palooza on Thursday, August 9, 2018 at the Virginia Crossings, Tapestry Collection by Hilton. The meeting will feature a breakfast at 8:30 a.m. followed by a SIG-a-Palooza event from 10:00-11:30 a.m.

The SIG-a-Palooza is a collection of small Shared Interest Group (SIG) meetings. The SIGs are member-led groups organized around areas of interest. They offer a forum for peer-to-peer learning in a small group atmosphere. The SIGs are a great way for association executives and other non-profit leaders to learn from colleagues about the issues relevant to them. There is no formal presentation or speaker, though the breakfast includes recognition of VSAE volunteer leaders from the previous year.

The following are the currently active SIGs that plan to meet at SIG-a-Palooza.

Association Management Companies - For executives of firms that provide management and specialized administrative services to trade associations and professional societies.

Communications & Marketing - For association professionals with both internal and external communications responsibilities (including electronic communications)

Emerging Association Professionals - For executives to support and advocate for the next generation of association leaders.

Government Affairs - For executives who lobby or are otherwise involved in association advocacy efforts.

Large Association CEOs - For CEOs of associations with six or more employees. Discussion topics include staff development, board relations, legislative issues, technology, and association resources.

Meeting Planner - For association professionals who are responsible for meeting planning within their organizations.

Senior Staff - For executives who deal with organization-wide issues like strategic planning, staff management, and organization culture.

Small Association CEOs - For CEOs of associations with five or fewer employees. Discussion topics include staff development, board relations, legislative issues, technology, and association resources.

Associate Member - For Associate Members in various roles, who wish to provide input on the value of their VSAE membership.

The seminar, “Something Needs to Change Around Here - The Five Stages to Leveraging Your Volunteer Leadership,” will use Weber’s insights from her own experience as a volunteer leader, her client examples, and exercises to share her model: The Five Stages of Focused Leadership Development. In addition, attendees will be offered the opportunity to take a leadership assessment before the program to learn which of the 5 stages of leadership they are modeling and what specific changes to make to enhance performance. During the lunch, Weber will present “Leveraging Stage 3 Leadership with Smart Strategic Plans.”

VSAE INSTALLS NEW VOLUNTEER LEADERSHIP FOR 2018-2019
Ray Mattes, III, CAE Becomes President

During its Annual Conference at Hilton Norfolk The Main, the Virginia Society of Association Executives (VSAE) installed its newly-elected 2018-2019 Board of Directors. Ray Mattes, III, CAE, President & CEO, Retail Alliance, was installed as President. Mr. Mattes succeeds Scot McRoberts, MPA, IOM, Executive Director, Virginia Council of CEOs, who became the Immediate Past President. 

“Ray brings a wealth of experience in association leadership. We are excited to see what the next year brings,” said Brandon Robinson, CAE, Executive Director of VSAE.

Duront A. “D” Walton, Jr., Executive Director, Virginia Telecommunications Industry Association, will serve as President Elect.

Other officers include, Phyllis Errico, JD, CAE, General Counsel, Virginia Association of Counties, who will serve as Treasurer, and, Maureen Dingus, CAE, Chief Operating Officer, Virginia Society of CPAs, who will serve as Secretary.

VSAE Announces 2018 Annual Conference
Ideas That Work

VSAE’s Annual Conference is Virginia’s premier educational conference for association professionals. The theme for this year’s conference is, “Ideas That Work.” It is scheduled for Sunday, May 6 through Tuesday, May 8, and will be hosted by Hilton Norfolk The Main and VisitNorfolk. The conference attracts nearly 200 attendees from all over the Commonwealth. In addition to association executives, the conference draws meeting planners, hoteliers, and other suppliers to the association management industry. More information can be found at vsae.org/annual.

This year’s opening keynote speaker is Christine Cashen. Cashen’s presentation, “Get What You Want With What You’ve Got!” implores attendees to join the campaign to stop “global whining,” and be a part of the solution by best utilizing the skills and potential that we all have to succeed in life. Cashen’s program will help participants communicate effectively with all different personality styles, create a better day with more energy and time, and discover how to have less stress and more fun.

The meeting will feature a breakfast from 8:30-9:45 a.m., followed by a 2.5-hour seminar at 10:00 a.m. The content leader will be Sheri Singer, President, Singer Communications.

Singer’s seminar, “Packing a Punch with Your Communications, PR and Marketing Campaigns,” will detail how to launch market research on a budget, identify target audiences, and create a strategic plan with today’s multichannel traditional and non-traditional communications. Through best practices and case studies, participants will walk away with the tools to develop communications content that supports a successful campaign. During the breakfast, Singer will present “No Need to Panic: Managing a Crisis Effectively.”

Based off the 2011 movie, Moneyball, attendees will learn what new data trends associations should be measuring and innovative ways to evaluate an association’s social media presence to effectively drive member engagement and satisfaction. During the luncheon, McCrimons will present “Three Tools Your Organization Can Start Using Today to Gather and Analyze Data More Efficiently.”

The meeting will feature a 2.5-hour seminar at 8:30 a.m., with a networking reception and luncheon to follow from 11:00 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. The content leader will be Yedda.

Yedda’s seminar, “Transforming Behaviors That Impact Your Bottom Line,” will focus on clearly articulating your organization’s “why.” Why does your association exist? Why do you get out of bed in the morning? Why should anyone join your organization? And why should anyone care? After attending this session, participants will be able to understand the greatest change they can make is not the behaviors of others but of themselves, and they will learn how to communicate their "why." During the luncheon, Yedda will present “What You Need to Be a Game Changer in Your Organization.” Learn the top three traits every “game changer” possesses and how to interact with one when you see them.
